Connection & source
Documented historical community and mission era connectionNPS explicitly describes Guale people living on St. Catherines Island in Georgia's Sea Islands during the mission era. This provides a Georgia historical-community connection; the former Spanish Florida jurisdiction does not turn the record into a present-day Florida location.

Connection & source
Historical regional geography in specialist scholarshipThe essay identifies Hitchiti among the native inhabitants of southern Georgia's wiregrass region and places them along the Ocmulgee River. This supports a Georgia historical connection for the people-name access point; it does not locate a particular Hitchiti tribal town or equate every Hitchiti-speaking town with that town.

Connection & source
Historical Lower Creek town/community connectionBlakney-Bailey's Oconee Old Town section describes an Oconee Lower Creek community relocating into north-central Georgia around 1690. It identifies the archaeological site near Milledgeville, Georgia as the likely location of that settlement. The community-history discussion, rather than the modern river name alone, supports this route. Inspection: Read title/date, Chapter 3 introduction on printed page 42, and Oconee Old Town subsection on printed pages 51–52, including its discussion of archaeological uncertainty and earlier investigations. Limits: The proposed archaeological identification remains 'likely' in the dissertation and is not upgraded to certainty. This concerns the historical Oconee Lower Creek town/community, not every similarly named Cherokee or coastal community. No precise archaeological coordinates, present-government identification, or exclusive territory is asserted. The archaeological society's historical compilation was also read but is replaced here by the more clearly attributed dissertation; the large Swanton PDF was not accessible and is not claimed as inspected.
Oconee Old Town section, A.D. 1680–1715; dissertation published 2007. Reviewed 2026-10-21.
