People, city and archaeological culture
Pensacola/Panzacola is a historical people-name associated with Pensacola Bay in West Florida. The initial reading path now points to original people-specific research and distinguishes this name from the later city and the broader archaeological Pensacola culture.
DeRoche’s thesis examines documentary and archaeological evidence for the historical Panzacola. The introduction and selected pages support this initial orientation; they do not establish a positively identified excavated village. The remaining thesis, contemporary descendant connections and other original accounts need further review.
Build a people-specific reading collection beyond the selected thesis passages; compare original documentary accounts and descendant/community histories.
The title page and repository cover differ in year. Neither a later city name nor archaeological ceramics alone establishes a people’s identity.

Academic / referenceUniversity of West Florida — Patrick Anthony DeRocheSource 1Supporting reference · outside substantive inspected count
DeRoche’s introduction explicitly places the historical Panzacola people around present-day Pensacola Bay in West Florida using seventeenth-century documentary accounts. His discussion distinguishes this people from the archaeological Pensacola culture; the test excavation did not establish a positive Panzacola site identification. Inspection: Actual university public download, valid-TLS HTTP 200, 2,675,875 bytes, 100 PDF pages including added cover. Cover/title; abstract printed p.viii / PDF p.9; introduction printed pp.1–3 / PDF pp.10–12; and printed p.8 / PDF p.17 were read as text/OCR. Not a complete thesis or excavation-data review. Limits: The canonical name Pensacola is retained; Panzacola is the historical people-label used by the thesis. The later city and archaeological culture are separate referents. No definitive excavated Panzacola village, coordinates, ethnicity-from-ceramics inference, contemporary recognition status or disappearance claim is adopted. This is an original student thesis with committee oversight, not a statement of consensus on every historical identification.
