Mohican

This Mohican reading route begins with history written and revised by the Stockbridge-Munsee community and a Tribe-curated exhibition in its eastern homelands. The sources connect repeated movement with continuing cultural and political life. Keep the broader historical name, the present Stockbridge-Munsee government and other peoples with similar names distinct.

A source guide for a deeper dive. This entry provides a brief orientation and an organized reading path. A comprehensive deep dive has not yet been completed. Follow the annotated sources and distinguish primary community accounts from outside reference material.
Still unfinished

A small, purposefully selected actual-content starting path and specifically scoped credited image are now available. Fuller history, source comparison and community review remain open; quantity does not establish completion.

Assessment recorded October 27, 2026. This is separate from research completion and community review.

  • Deepen community-authored Mohican history before and beyond the selected migration narrative.
  • Compare original records and additional Munsee accounts; a combined government does not make all related peoples interchangeable.
  • Follow later public-history projects through community evaluations and dated access information.

Source & image record ↗ · CC0 1.0 — photographer’s explicit dedication

The property is context for the specifically documented Tribe-curated Mohican Miles exhibit in the eastern homelands, not a Mohican-built dwelling or the exhibit interior. Commons file-specific own-work identification, creator, date and explicit CC0 dedication inspected; downloaded 5472x3648 original and full frame visually inspected. The Trustees’ past-exhibition account establishes that the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe curated Mohican Miles from its archives in the separate Carriage House behind the Mission House. This 2017 photograph gives property/institution context before that 2021-2022 exhibit. It is not an image of the exhibition, a Tribal dwelling, the Wisconsin reservation or an endorsement of the missionary history. The separate exhibition space is not claimed to be the main house shown. No crop or pixel editing made here. Complete available 5472×3648 source frame proportionally resized to 1800×1200 and JPEG recompressed; no pixel crop or retouching. Original source copy retained privately. CSS crops/overlays affect display only.

Following a community-authored history

Dorothy Davids’s brief history, revised by the Stockbridge-Munsee Historical Committee in 2017, follows movement from eastern homelands to Wisconsin and the rebuilding of community institutions. The selected pages describe Munsee relatives joining the community and the development of the Stockbridge-Munsee name. This is a community historical account with a stated revision history; it is not a complete genealogy or a substitute for the original records it discusses.

04

A return through public interpretation

The Trustees’ account of the 2021–2022 Mohican Miles exhibition describes Tribal curation using the Arvid E. Miller Memorial Library Museum’s archives. The exhibition occupied the separate Carriage House behind the Mission House in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. This offers an example of the community shaping public history in its homelands. The dated exhibition notice does not establish current opening, access to every object or a later agreement’s implementation.

A Brief History of the Mohican Nation: The Stockbridge-Munsee Band — selected pages

Publication: 2017

Dorothy Davids’s community history, revised by the Historical Committee in 2017, connects repeated moves with the formation and rebuilding of the Stockbridge-Munsee community in Wisconsin.

Inspection: Content reviewed for the stated scope

Scope: Physical PDF pages 2-3,7 and 10 visually read, including title/acknowledgments and printed pages 4 and 7. The historical migration and rebuilding passages were compared with selectable text because the multi-column extraction interleaves columns. Other pages, maps, bibliography works, original treaty texts and present acreage/population were not reviewed or adopted. The booklet’s mistaken 1832 date for the Indian Removal Act is not repeated.
